The Raft is a project conceived by the late master Ezzeddine Gannoun, founder of the El Hamra Theater in Tunis. Before his death, Gannoun was planning his next creation, titled The Raft, about refugees crossing the Mediterranean Sea from countries in North Africa and the Middle East to Europe. These refugees seek safe haven all over the world.
They are illegal immigrants crammed into a small raft. They have come together to share an escape and a dream. They are fleeing countries torn apart by wars and politics. They are fleeing injustice, oppression and poverty. They are escaping discrimination based on gender identity, sexual orientation, religious practices, and political beliefs. They also share a dream. They dream of a new life in another land; a land where they can rest their weary souls and bodies.
Eight characters come from Lebanon, Syria, Tunisia and other African and Arab countries. Their countries are divided by geography, politics and borders. The raft unites them. They are united by their deep human suffering and deep fears. When a storm hits their raft on the open sea, they fight. They challenge each other and struggle to survive. Ultimately, they represent the eternal human journey between life and death. Or are they actually running from one death to another? Are they? Who are they?
