The bel canto technique emerged in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, but its roots can be found throughout the Middle Ages. It began in the singing instruction that Italian captains provided for their students.
Bel canto means, more literally, “beautiful singing.” It's a term used to describe all Italian singing, but in particular the light, luminous quality that Italian opera singers used to charm audiences. Despite bel canto's popularity, the history of the art is complex and mysterious.
Italian castrati were renowned for their use of this style of singing. During the Renaissance, when opera was first created in Italy, bel canto became the singing style used for this new art form. Later, it became famous for its use by other opera singers, notably sopranos. Today, sopranos Joan Sutherland and Kathleen Battle keep this tradition alive.
The secret of bel canto, some claim, lies in continuity of tone. Many singers are judged on their ability to move from one musical phrase to another with little or no interruption. The art of maintaining passages to create a beautiful line can be seen in the performances of bel canto's most famous singers.
Rossini, Donizetti, Bellini and Marcello Pacini are just some of the most famous bel canto composers.Their operas feature the light, soprano and tenor arias that have made Italian opera so famous.
From the popularity of Andrea Bocelli and other Italian singing stars, we can see that bel canto will be in vogue for quite some time.
